Weenie on the Windshield

Is it shock? Is it morbid fascination? Is it horrified curiosity? We see the young newly-weds confronted by a singularly strange object, one which should not be out of its protective packaging, let alone lodged on the windshield of their car. How did it get there? Who placed it there, for surely the laws of chance do not allow for it to have fallen into its position randomly.

Does it have alternate meanings, perhaps even Freudian in nature? Perhaps, though it is equally true to say that sometimes a weenie is just a weenie.

The word weenie, is of course, an Anglicization of its German original, wiener.

The word dates to 1904, a shortening of wienerwurst (1889), from Ger. Wiener "of Vienna" (from Wien "Vienna," from L. Vindo-bona, from Gaulish vindo-, from Celt. vindo- "white;" cf. O.Ir. find, Welsh gwyn "white;" see Gwendolyn) + Wurst "sausage." Clipped form wienie is attested from 1911. Extensive pejorative senses developed from its penis-like shape.

Can the weenie only be representative? Or can it have its own inherent meaning? Is it possible for anything to have an inherent meaning?

The weenie, and the obvious strong reaction it elicits, are a sign of something more significant, that of organisms in their significant environments, denoted as Umwelt by Jakob von Uexkull. A semiosis of the weenie will involve both genetic and verbal codes.

The Umwelt is the part of the environment that the organism “chooses” to inhabit; it is the perceptual universe of the organism (both the weenie and the occupants of the car, as well as the car itself). However, the organism also acts as a sign of the Umwelt in that the structure of the organism (how the weenie is made) will, in some sense, give clues to the nature of its environment (the windshield, in this case).

Conversely, the Umwelt also shows that it is itself a sign of the organism, in that it is possible to make inferences about the organism based on an analysis of its environment (what is the nature of this particular windshield, for example?).

Both are thus brought together in a quasi-Peircean way by a third factor, a code which we may refer to as the “meaning plan.” This code is the master entity, in that it is outside of the organism proper and precedes its existence (the design of the weenie, for example, and the improbability of it ending up on a windshield).

Yet the organism enacts an ongoing process of interpreting its Umwelt, giving birth to new organisms (little weenies), born into a pre-existing Umwelt, but which are contributing to a further interpretation of said Umwelt.

This may, in the case of this photo, be nothing more than “what the hell is a weenie doing on our windshield?!” Or, it may be vastly more complex.

The question, for now, cannot be satisfactorily resolved.
